Name: Zanarath Penn
Age: 17
Year in Salem: Senior
Gender: Female
Birthday/Sign: June the 8th, Gemini
Blood Type/Purity: Pure-blood
Appearance: Zanarath is quite a tall girl for her age (5'9), and has a typical athletic figure. Her long, brown hair is usually messy and a bit wavy. She has a very distinctive smile, which usually turns in sort of an obnoxious smirk. She blinks often and quite quickly, batting her long eyelashes. Zanarath's gestures are a bit boyish and she doesn't pay much attention in trying to be graceful and sweet.
Personality: Zanarath likes to stand out, to be credited for what she does or tries to do. She's not a typical ambitious, studious person that would do anything to accomplish a certain thing. No, Zanarath's has her own circle of interests and doesn't pay special attention to things and concepts that don't interest her. If in her opinion, if some phenomenon is worth taking away her precious time, she will give her best and solve it for her own benefit. She likes to think of herself as an intellectual and impress people that surround her with her knowledge of a certain issue. If she lacks knowledge of a topic discussed, she will instantly develop an opinion towards it, no matter how biased or incorrect it might be.
In general, she is a good student, but maybe not the best role-model. She likes to appear as a careless, a bit of a lazy slacker, but her school results show that it isn't the case. Her time revolves basically only around her interests and ambitions which result brilliantly.
Zanarath is quick and will probably always have an answer to any question, or an opinion about something. She believes that her unique thinking and opinions on various matters can make a difference, and therefore she will be ready to fight for them, and defend her statements. Despite the fact that Zanarath usually has an answer for anything (no matter how rude or inappropriate it might be), she is never the one to provoke a person for no reason, or bully someone. Of course, if someone is purposely being rude to her, she will probably abuse her verbal skills and her intelligent view on the world.
Although she might seem cynical and even sarcastic at times, deep inside Zanarath is a typical Voltaire-type 'All is for the best' optimist. Whatever happens to her, she will try to find a bright side and a way out it. Also, she will tend to pick her friends based on first impressions and the light they showed themselves in. If she doesn't like someone, that's just a fact which won't change, and that particular person will not get a second chance to prove himself.
Despite everything, when everything is summed up, Zanarath is basically not the nicest person in the world. Yes, she has an unbiased view on people and possesses incredible concentration and patience skills, but her more distinctive 'skills' are her loudness and something that can often be classified as verbal abuse. Of course, Zanarath will generally be very careful what she is saying in front of older and more respected people, but that doesn't mean she will not represent her own opinion (hence she always has one).
The issue is, Zanarath is - how to put it delicately - a coward. Maybe the greatest thing that she would dare is talking back to a teacher, which would also be within relatively respectable boundaries. Everything else that she might do and it classifies as 'courageous' would be only because she wouldn't like to appear weak in front of others. Logically, her other fear is a fear of being rejected by the society and that's why she behaves the way she does. And she does it well, so far.
History: The Penn’s - a relatively old family from Boston that got wealthy during the Industrial Revolution. Today, the Penn family is significantly reduced and lives off old money - that is slowly vanishing. Among the less-than-a-dozen remained members, there is Mr. Gerard Penn, Zanarath's father, who chose the occupation of a typical well-educated old-money person; a researcher and a writer who goes on many expeditions in South America.
Zanarath's mother Julia unfortunately deceased when Zan was very young, so she doesn't remember her. Not that that fact made Zanarath's childhood difficult - her father is a proper man who took good care of her and taught her everything he knew. Gerard's fiancé, a young Columbian author Adrianna Rodriguez wasn't exactly a replacement for a mother, but it was sufficient enough. The fact that she was younger, made Zan feel as if she has an older sister, and the fact that Adrianna was extremely smart and witty, made Zanarath respect her highly.
Adrianna's most popular work is a book about theories within the concept of Alchemy. Growing up with a researcher and an expert for Alchemy made Zanarath generally interested in the subject and she managed to learn a lot about it during her lifetime. Also, the three of them traveled to South America, or more precisely - to the Amazon rainforest, quite frequently due to the various investigations from her father's exclusive researcher club.
As mentioned before, the old family money is slowly getting away and Zanarath calculates that she will be left with a very pitiful inheritance and a huge, empty house in Boston that could easily become a ruin. That is why she, unlike her father doesn't rely on the old wealth and tries to think of ways to earn her own money in the future. She is also slightly disappointed with her father's way of thinking, which is a bit selfish and careless.
All in all, Zanarath had a nice, normal childhood, traveling a lot with her father who home-schooled her. Zanarath isn't spoiled in any way, but the way she turned out in general is because all the different people she met during their travels. She used to spend time talking to various people who visited the Amazon during the expedition, much of whom were not really nice people. Of course, she wasn't aware that a great majority of the people she used to spend time with were criminals, bounty hunters and Dark wizards, who eventually changed her view of the world.
Likes: Zanarath likes intelligent people and someone who is 'worth talking to'. She also likes debate and when she realizes she managed to accomplish something she wanted. She likes people that will defend their point of view, no matter how different it might be from her own. Also, she enjoys reading and dueling, however never had much very good chance for the latter.
Dislikes: She dislikes weak people, someone who will not fight for their stand. Despite the fact that she seems very nonchalant and irresponsible at times, she hates irresponsibility and takes her duties and interests very seriously. Zan also hates irrationality and fights that are completely unnecessary.
Special Abilities: Although Zanarath can be unusually patient and well concentrated which mainly contributes to her wand skills and Alchemy experiments, her main special ability is her attitude and preparedness to always defend her viewpoint. She is quick-minded and always has a opinion.
Hopes and Dreams: Her biggest hope is to become someone who will, unlike her father, be able to contribute to the family name much more. She is aware how to use her best skills and hopes to get some sort of a political leadership position of influence sometime in the future. Or maybe write a book...or both.
Wand: 12 inches, rosewood, dragon heartstring
Broom: Nimbus 2001
Pet: A snake that was magically painted in bright pink, named Gracioso.

It was lunch time, but the tall, distinctive figure of Miss Zanarath Penn could be easily spotted in the library. Not that it was a typical thing for such a person to avoid company of her peers and engage into another interesting discussion, but a fairly interesting idea about Alchemy essay occurred to her. She had a copy of Rodriguez's English version of 'The basic writings of Paracelsus' and she decided to include some of her interesting standpoints from the book and then reference it into her already quite lengthy essay. It was definitely worth it - not only that a nice grade was guaranteed (that didn't really matter at the moment), but also the Professor will surely recognize the brilliance and knowledge of the person who obviously wrote it.
Smiling happily, she finished a couple of final lines, blew on the parchment to make the dark-blue ink dry and wrote a large 'Z' on the top of the paper, accompanied with a smaller word; 'Penn'. Smashing her book loudly, she packed it into her schoolbag in haste and rolled the parchment quickly. After getting up, she decided to run, realizing that she is actually quite hungry, but to her great misfortune, crashed into some random student.
Generally, Zanarath was far from a clumsy person, but this time she obviously didn't pay attention. Just like the guy who (most likely) accidentally got in her way. The poor thing started apologizing when he realized she's a Senior, but she wasn't bothered at the moment. Shrugging, she smiled in a very 'I-feel-sorry-for-you-kid' way. "Don't worry, next time try to aim for a shelf or something that's not me." She didn't want to waste time with random people at the moment, so she didn't wait for his response, just winked and carried in her own direction, still with a happy expression on her face.
