Appearance:
Personality:
As the baby of the McGinnis family, Kevin displays much of the ‘third child’ He’s very affectionate, good natured, and ‘loose’ in his day to day activities. He doesn’t let things weigh him down and instead finds something to get his spirits back up and trudge on. He is often given someone a ‘pick me up’ when they are feeling down, if he happens to notice they need it.
He doesn’t understand his parents, and identifies more with his peers. Among his classmates, he is considered ‘popular’ in the way that most people know of him and may want to congregate to him. Due to his flexible thinking, that he can change his decision as needed, many come to him for silly schemes that need help.
All in all, Kevin is the most laid back in his family, and is often harping on his older siblings to loosen up and have a good time. He gets along well with his sister and brother, though he tends to have less arguments with his sister. Perhaps it was because he put her in the ‘mother figure’ area instead of ‘older sister’ because of their mother dying when they were younger.
Oh… right… the bad traits… Kevin has a very quick temper. Don’t ask about it, he might blow up. Enough said on that issue. He also has mother and father abandonment issues. Again, not something he likes to talk about.
History:
The youngest child of Brendon and Sarah McGinnis, and coincidentally the only one born in the United States, Kevin Brendon McGinnis, was born August 11, 1979, in a run down Queens hospital in New York. At seven pounds, three ounces, and fifty two centimeters long, his father was proud that one of his boys would be big and strong. He came out screaming, and for Brendon, that was a sign that this one would have many of his strong traits.
1983 started out as an uneventful year. In late July, though, Brendon was working hard at his roofing job. While working in the sweltering heat, the roof gave way under him as it had been poorly patched before, and over time it had weakened. His leg was permanently mangled, and Brendon was then the subject of his wife and children on a daily basis. Not a man to take things sitting down, it was a terrible blow to his self esteem and his temper. Alcohol replaced the hours he would have worked, and the verbal abuse began.
While Kyle received much of the abuse, Kevin found that wasn’t fair, and often spoke about it to his father or mother or sister or Kyle, even, whoever would listen to the little three year old. While Brendon encouraged the attitude most of the time, if Kevin went off on his father about how he treated Kyle, he ended up over his father’s knee. Did that stop the active little boy? Of course not...
Kevin was always seen following his big brother around for most of his younger years, trying to cling and copy everything Kyle did. His big sister was there, too, but she didn’t do all the cool things Kyle did. She had weird toys that she cried about if Kevin broke. And then his temper tantrums began at the tender age of two. He wanted anything that was in his reach, and many things that weren’t. If he didn’t get them, he cried until someone shut him up.
Kevin was also a momma’s boy. His sister did her own thing, and was starting school when he was born. His brother was often playing with his toys or bothering their father when they weren’t playing. Kevin clung to his mother’s legs most of the time, and she was often the one who calmed him down. Whenever Kyle made fun of him for it, though, Kevin learned to hit the older sibling in retaliation. Even when he got caught and punished for it, Kevin just got better at hitting him when their mother wasn’t around.
Preschool started after his fourth birthday, and things were moving along well. He only got in trouble a few times before the Christmas holidays... December 20th rolled around, and Kevin was with his father watching a rerun of a soccer game while his mother was out shopping. Unbeknownst to the other members of the family, Sarah was an undercover Auror who had infiltrated the Death Eaters in Europe. Hence why they moved to the United States. However, one upset DE tracked down Sarah, and after a fight to the death, the DE died in her last breath.
The news shattered the family bond. As he was nearest his father when the news finally came, he was also the one who got the first beating. Not that he used that to make his other siblings feel bad; after that, he lost track of how often they were beaten. It didn’t help that Brendon found out after the death that his wife, the woman he had trusted and loved and had children with, was a witch.
Kevin was kicked out of preschool in early February of 1984 because he beat on two boys his age like his father had beat on him. Holding one down, he beat on the poor boy until the other tried to push him off, and Kevin turned his anger on that one, kicking and punching until a teacher heard the cries. Brendon showed Kevin how thick the belt was after that, partially because it meant he had to deal with the boy more than he wanted to.
Kaitlyn was, obviously, the first of the children they found out had magic. Kevin had tried to pull his father off her after all the alcohol bottles were shattered with her magical rage, and had ended up thrown against the wall and restrained by Kyle. Luckily for his sister, she was able to get away soon enough and head to Coven school. As happy as he was for her, it meant that Kyle and Kevin were beat on more by their father.
Kevin always took blame for Kyle, finding reasons for why it was him and letting the beating happen to him. One time that stuck in his mind, because he ended up in the hospital for it, was when Kyle had dropped a bucket of paint in the bedroom, spilling it all over the carpet. So what did Kevin do? He first heard the thundering crash and screaming that came from his father getting up from his spot in the living room, and deciding that he would prefer taking the heat, he jumped in the paint and covered himself with the dark blue wetness. The door had almost come off the hinges when his father burst through... A three inch scar is what remains of that beating, when a lamp broke from him being thrown against a dresser, and part of the broken lamp sliced through his forearm.
No matter how often his father beat him, or how often he took the blame for both his mistakes and Kyle’s, Kevin loved them both more than he could explain. For him, he needed the family to stay together. His mother was gone, and he thought it was his duty to make his father proud and somehow make her death okay for Brendon. When he wasn’t doing that, or going to school, Kevin stayed out in the streets and played with other boys, most of them much older than him. Kyle stuck to art, Kevin began beating up other weaklings in the community.
Kyle began Coven school a year late, and that left Kevin at home with his father. During that time, Kevin came to understand his father more than he thought he could relay to either of his siblings. His father was a strong man, one that never gave into weakness, and for the past so many years had been forced to live with his own weaknesses day in, day out. Kevin kept the observation to himself; either sibling would have laughed at him for finding reason for the madness that sat in the living room.
When Kaitlyn came home from her first year at some witches school, something happened that Kevin was both disgusted about and intrigued. She forced the blows Brendon was trying to inflict on her to show up on him. After that, Brendon found something else to torture his sons’ with since he was afraid to hit them. Religion came to knock on Kyle and Kevin. It was a way to spend time with his dad, though, and made him want to make his father more proud. So, he attended Mass and attempted to learn the bible just for his dad, even though it would never make Brendon care for Kevin any more than he ever had.
At twelve, Kevin was confirmed with his older brother at the shabby Catholic church in Queens, receiving the confirmation name of Joseph. Kevin never understood Kyle’s hatred for church, much preferring it to the beating that they endured for years. And confessing his sins and being forgiven was helpful; it gave Kevin a reason to have something new to tell the Priest in confession. It was interesting going to both a Coven school one day, and then going to Mass the next.
In 1993, Kaitlyn graduated from SWIM. She adopted both Kyle and Kevin, taking them from the abusive home that Brendon had fostered over the years. Kevin was quite distraught, having not wanted to leave his father. No matter what had happened, Brendon was still his father, and had provided for him, no matter how little. Kyle and Kaitlyn never understood his feelings on the matter, and he eventually quit trying to argue them.
During the year his brother began SWIM, and Kevin was going to Coven school, he found that women were easy to latch on to. He had a charm about him that most fell for, and he was becoming quite good at wording things so that they made anyone melt. Kaitlyn threw herself into the coffee shop, Kyle latched on to his art, and Kevin romanced the ladies and worked out. He had to keep up his tough man appearance, otherwise his father might really look down at his youngest son, if he ever got to see the man again...
When it came time to take his SMART exams, Kevin barely studied his texts. He was able to remember quite a lot if he looked over it a few times, and easily sailed through the exams with high grades. During his time at SWIM, his friends were always sick with the fact he didn’t have to study hard for an exam to pass easily. Kevin always tried to explain how he did it, but no one seemed to understand. Brushing it off, Kevin would form a study group only if there was an amazingly beautiful woman he was trying to converse with, and only stayed if she was interested.
Now a senior at SWIM, Kevin has a full load, hoping that if he can do something worthwhile, perhaps if he could show his father that not all wizards were crap, then perhaps he could feel love and acceptance from Brendon. He wrote frequently to his father, talking more about things he was doing and girls he was with than what he was studying and why. Sometimes he got a reply back, but that was seldom. Maybe three times a term he got a response for the fifteen letters or more he sent out. And each of those letters were cherished and kept in a little box that he took with him wherever he was living.
