August 2nd - After the Picnic
Even the basement smelled better since she returned to the castle. Emma had dreamed of returning to her old room since the day she left; she could even retrace the pair of initials etched into the floor three rooms down: A.J. & B.C. Emma never knew whom the two were, but they were forever a part of her memory of SWIM. While Emma had hoped to be roomed with Hannah once more, the room listings told another story. She was to room with a Senior. Although she had heard of the girl, Emma couldn't say she was acquainted with her. In fact all that she heard about the girl was somewhere between insanely obnoxious and best left alone. Needless to say it filled Emma with a little anxiety as she made her way to the room.
Knocking on the doory just in case the girl was already in there, Emma took a breath before opening the door. Refusing to stand in the opening like a deer caught in headlights for her roommate's instant judgment, Emma automatically headed for the nearest bed, setting her small bag at the foot of it. Her larger things would come later, but for now she just had her necessities and more fragile items.
Turning around, Emma prepared herself for the first meeting. Yes, she was nervous, but Emma knew it had to be gotten over. It was odd, she wasn't as nervous as she had thought to be. Being in the old room had given her a sense of self back. She wasn't a frightened freshman but a Junior, Emma Vale of all people! Who was she to be frightened by tales of a senior.

It was her last year here and Zanarath felt as if the time passed too quickly. She probably expected more from this school and didn't want to leave after this year, but on the other hand, seeking for a job scared her slightly. Well, she didn't need to worry that much about grades and studying, since that was always a piece of cake for her - no matter how difficult things might get during the Senior year.
And now she found out that her new Room mate was some younger girl. She didn't have a special desire of changing a room mate again. Just when she got used to a certain person, they would switch it. It made Zan angry and she even considered going to talk to the school Dean about the issue. Unfortunately, she knew nothing could be changed for now, since she didn't even know the girl properly.
This Emma Vale...Zan literally didn't bother too much to even talk to her before. She knew her from some classes and from what would other people talk, but nothing that would make her especially impressive in Zanarath's eyes. Of course, maybe she was mistaken - maybe Emma was a great person, but she will prove herself worthy of the Agripa house. Whatever that meant.
She carried a handful of books and her large, black suitcase. Her school robes were hanging sloppily from her shoulders from the weight of literally loaded pockets. There were candies from the travel, parchments, useless stuff and the pink snake. Opening the door loudly by slamming herself against it, Zanarath threw the books on the floor of the room, thinking that no-one was there yet. Just at the moment when the door closed, she realized the other girl. Smiling weakly, she picked up the books from the dusty floor, dropped them next her bed and the suitcase.
Fixing her robes a bit, she outstretched her arm towards the girl in order to shake hers. "Hello," she said loudly and clearly. It was funny how they never actually spoke to each other before. And Zan thought she was a social person...right..."You know I'm Zanarath. Zan for friends. You're Emma, I know that. Are you from Boston?" That was said quickly and in an interrogative manner.

Of course no one was there when she expected them to be. With a half-smile, Emma almost wished there was someone, a Miss Penn to be exact. Judging by the girl's first name there was a wild hippie tale mixed in her life story somewhere. At first Emma had been excited about meeting a Zanarath, someone decidedly off the usual traditional role, but hearsay had turned that anticipation into the dread that glistened her palms already.
Slumping down onto the bed, Emma kicked off her shoes before lying on the bed. She had only a second to relax before a loud slam sat her straight up. Her spine still shivered from the shock as she watched Zanarath enter the room. Wincing at the loud sounds of books hitting the floor, Emma only watched in shock as Zanrath made her way in.
"Hello, You know I'm Zanarath. Zan for friends. You're Emma, I know that. Are you from Boston?"
Taking Zan's hand in her own, Emma shook it firmly before withdrawing. The questions hit her with an impersonal force she hadn't expected from the girl. "Yes. Belmont," she replied haltingly. Standing to her own feet, Emma didn't know what quite to do with the girl. "Zanareth, that's an odd name, isn't it?" she asked, quite happy to find some footing in the small room.

Zanarath noticed the girl probably felt uneasy or even scared. Yes, the most younger students felt that way towards her. She just looked like trouble probably, she was loud and had very odd name. That, and she actually acted that way most of the time...Even now, she threw the books on the floor, banged with the door. Seriously, she should pay a bit more attention or she might turn into a typical arrogant stereotype Agrippa student, like the most of her friends.
"Yes. Belmont. Zanareth, that's an odd name, isn't it?"
She shrugged quickly, sitting on her bed and still watching the girl opposite her. "Belmont. I know someone who owns a restaurant there." Zanarath hoped she will find Emma interesting enough after all, she did want to share the same room with someone she doesn't like. Of course, like most of the people she met, Emma asked about her name. It was a strange name, but she didn't mind it. "My name's just rare. Most people think it's a boy's name, but as far as I know it's some ancient South American spirit." Her parents travelled often and met all sorts of people, so Zan wasn't surprised that they picked such an unusual name along their way.
"What classes are you taking?" She was curious about her new room mate, and maybe she will be able to find out more about her by seeing what her interests are.

"Belmont. I know someone who owns a restaurant there."
"What resturant?" Emma asked, curious that they already had a connection. Of course she expected to have some things in common with her, being in the same class, but not a connection back in the real world. As Zanarath sat down on her bed, Emma found herself aping the girl, but choosing to pull her legs up onto the bed with the rest of her.
"My name's just rare. Most people think it's a boy's name, but as far as I know it's some ancient South American spirit."
"That's interesting," she mused, offering a genuine smile. It seemed the girl was alright after all. Although the beginning interrogation frightened Emma at first, Zan seemed to be nice, in a sense. Of course if Emma had been named anything less common than Emma, she would have known all about it, but that was just her. Exotic names never found a footing in her life, everyone being too afraid to break the mold.
"What classes are you taking?"
"Cores, Magizoo and Runes," she replied with a small sigh. Magizoology wasn't her favorite subject, but she had already taken Muggle Studies her sophmore year. While the class had been interesting, it didn't capture her attention enough to deem worthy of a second year. "And you?" she asked, tilting her head lightly to the left, her hands lying delicately in her lap.

Zan simply shrugged once again at Emma’s reply about her name being interesting. If she was really interested she would probably ask more. Not wanting to be too annoying, she didn’t say anything else about it. Maybe Emma found it weird to share a room with someone with such a different name. Zanarath couldn’t help it, and she really didn’t mind her name. It was different, just like herself.
"Cores, Magizoo and Runes. And you?"
From that point of view, it seemed like they don’t have things in common. But Zan couldn’t judge the girl by that, maybe she didn’t really want to take those subjects. Magizoology was relatively boring in Zan’s eyes, but then again, so were Muggle studies which she had to take because of her carrier choice. “Cores, Prescience and Numerology. Those two are the subjects I really like, but I have to take Muggle studies this year too.” Zan made a small grimace, remembering that odd professor Pratt and his boring subject. “I never took it before. I went through some books though, and it seems uninteresting. Did you ever take it?”

Nodding as the Zan listed her classes, Emma wished she had taken Numerology as well. Of course, Runes sounded interesting enough, but numerology sounded quite intriguing, but it was too late. Hopefully Emma would enjoy her runeology class just the same, it would just have been interesting to see how Zan was in a classroom instead of a dormroom.
"I took it last year, it was an alright class," she spoke, catching herself in the act of a slouch. "Although Professor Pratt tries his best, it's quite hard to make the subject interesting. Those raised as muggles or even partly muggles already know everything, and those who weren't don't care. It's hard to keep the class's attention when no one is interested," she mused, remembering her own class.
"At least he doesn't assign too much homework, Professor Pratt's nice like that," she added, "Though the essays are quite dull. Have you taken Runes before?" she asked as an afterthought. It would be nice to see what Zan thought of the class, if it was any better than Numerology.

Nodding, Zan figured as much. Pratt and the textbooks for his subject seemed as interesting as the essence of boredom. There was really no point of taking that subject if you were already a muggle, but some people were just plain lazy and wanted to fix their grade average with a nice unfairly earned grade from Muggle studies. A pity that a social science such as politics required at least one year of that horrendous subject. "I guess Pratt would have to be a genius to keep wizards actually interested about the topics he has to offer. Well, I guess I'll survive one year without dying of boredom."
"Though the essays are quite dull. Have you taken Runes before?"
Smiling a bit to herself, Zan figured that the only joy of taking Pratt's class will probably be the essay writing one. Oh, she'll have fun with that, she'll make it interesting for herself and have a bit of entertainment too. "No, I never took Runes. Though sometimes I feel a bit sorry because of that. Many texts about Alchemy require the knowledge of various types of ancient runes, so it's difficult sometimes to prove a point when writing an essay. I like to include evidence from many different sources."

"It won't be too bad," Emma offered, even though she knew it would still be quite an annoyance. Although interesting classes were somewhat of a rarity, she still hoped that all of hers might be. Emma couldn't imagine already dreading a class before it started. Then again, Emma couldn't say she was looking forward to her Magizoology classes either.
"No, I never took Runes. Though sometimes I feel a bit sorry because of that. Many texts about Alchemy require the knowledge of various types of ancient runes, so it's difficult sometimes to prove a point when writing an essay. I like to include evidence from many different sources."
"Yes, it'll be nice to know what some of the books are talking about," she admitted, glad to have found a new incentive for the class. It truly didn't matter, Emma was still taking the class regardless, but she enjoyed having something to look forward to. "Are you a writer, then?" Emma asked curiously, interested at the admission of such detailed essay writings. "I mean," she spoke up, realizing the stupidity of such a question, "Is that what you intend to do, as a profession?"
