Name: Mikala “Mik” Kona
Age: 62
Gender: Male
Birthday/Sign: February 29/Pisces
Blood Type/Purity:AB/ Pure
Appearance:
• Mik has whitish grey hair that’s a bit on the long and shaggy side. However he does try to comb it down. He has a bald spot that he is alternately proud of and hides under a hat.
• He has bright blue eyes that are often full of humor or mischief
• Mik stands at about 6 feet tall even. He still has a slightly athletic build from his sailing which he does frequently on his boat, Waikiki Sunset.
• Mik favors the Hawaiian style shirts, button down shirts, tees and jeans. It’s a very laidback style.
Personality: Mik is a very laidback man. He feels nothing in life is worth stressing over. So he’ll sit back and cruise his way through any trouble he hits. However he can fight if anyone threatens those he considers family, specifically Tristin who is the son he never had. He is very protective of Tristin and is often trying to help the man see the treasure that’s in front of him. The only time his temper comes out is when he sees people doing something very stupid and he will call them on it. Tristin can attest to that.
For the most part, Mik is friendly with everyone and says very little that can be taken seriously. It’s his belief that children learn the best through experience, even if it means falling flat on their face. He is also very patient. Which with a boss like Tristin you had to be.
History: Mik was born on the island of Kona in Hawaii. He had a normal loving childhood. Alea Kona was a young native woman who first taught her son, Mik the power of music through her singing him island songs. Mik enjoyed his mother’s singing and dancing that he often mimicked her much to his father’s amusement and cringe. Jason Kona was mainland sailor who worked for a local coffee plantation. Every Sunday Jason would take his family sailing on their boat. Those were Mik’s favorite memories, sailing the Pacific on his family’s boat. Mik became a full fledge sailor by ten often helping his father navigate on their outings. Mik decided then that no matter what he would have a boat to sail. He would always treasure those Sundays with his father and mother.
At age 14, Mik received his SWIM letter much to the surprise of his parents since neither had attended the exclusive school. Unfortunately, his family was poor and Mik couldn’t afford the money to attend the school. He stoically gave up his place to another student that he felt deserved it. He was going to be a singing sailor after all. His parents felt he deserved some training and they gave him private lessons when he came home from school. Mik was a fast learner and had a knack for simple charms.
After graduating from the local high school with extremely high marks, Mik joined the Merchant Marines to achieve his dreams of being a sailor. He learned a lot during his tours of duty including how to handle people. He found that when he sang, he could usually calm down the crew. His nightly concerts were some thing the crew enjoyed. In fact they often bragged about his talent when on leave and often Mik would serenade his buddies and their girls. While at port in Key West, they got him to sing at a local dive. It was there that he was discovered at age 28 by an aspiring agent. After much arguing and negotiating, Mik agreed to give a singing career a go. So he got a discharge and went to Nashville with the agent.
Mik Kona was somewhat of an underground sensation. He has quite a few big hits but nothing would have made him super famous, which suited him fine. It meant he was a steady moneymaker for the label. He does have a cult following that he thoroughly enjoys greatly even to this day. Mik sent a good portion of his paycheck to his parents to help support them so they didn’t need to work hard anymore to make ends met.
While coming off of a tour, Mik meet a sweet young lady, Michele, who was a medical student in Nashville. Mik fell hard for Michele who felt the same and they began to steadily date. Michele often traveled with Mik to Hawaii and all over when she didn’t have school. They were happy until one day Michele collapsed while in Hawaii. The doctor determined that Michele has advanced cancer and was terminal. Mik quit singing to stay by her side. He stayed there when she died six months later. Mik was devastated by the loss that he barely noticed his own mother getting weaker by the day. His mother hid her own illness as she helped Mik cope through music. Eventually Mik was reborn through song writing. It would help him through the loss of his mother to fibrosis, even thought they had no idea what that was at the time. Alea’s death hit both father and son very hard. Mik decided it was time to leave Hawaii for a bit. He convinced Jason to leave with him and the two moved to Salem’s peak. Mik had no idea why Salem’s Peak, but his father loved the small village. Pooling together their money, they opened, Kona’s, a local bar and grill. They were quite successful for several years, especially with the school crowd from SWIM the school Mik refused several decades earlier. Mik enjoyed the students. He found them fascinating and the teachers were fun to talk to. His father often adopted the local students as his grandchildren. In 1986, Jason passed away in his sleep. Mik returned him to Hawaii to be laid to rest next to Alea and Michele. Kona’s remained close for three weeks to mourn the loss of its owner and so Mik could cope. He wasn’t sure if he could go on. He reopened the bar with a heavy heart, unsure if he had the heart to continue on. Thank heavens for the SWIM students and staff. They made him survive another two years. During that time he first met Tristin Wright, an ambitious young man and his gorgeous aunt, Gabrielle Blagden.
Mik struck up a friendship with the lonely young man. He could see that Tristin was smart and clever. He made a deal with the young man, if he graduated with high honors, Mik would sell him the bar for a dollar. Mik didn’t need any more money and he could see that Tristin had a raw talent for business. So Mik waited and be damned, the boy did it. As a result, Mik ‘retired’ but stuck around to help Tristin get the business off the ground. He’s been helping Tristin ever since. Mostly to provide the boy with some much need guidance especially where a gorgeous mermaid named, Mercy LaCroix is concerned. He also tried to court Gabrielle Blagden much to Tristin’s annoyance. But hey, give him credit for trying. Beside Mik is sure that as soon as he gets her to agree to a sail, she’ll have to at least like him. Delusional
Mik currently enjoys his retired lifestyle. He has a boat in the local marina called the Waikiki Sunset that he bought with his father. If Mik is not in his cottage or behind the bar at the Wicked Thrill, he is sailing on the Atlantic, reliving his childhood one more time.
Likes:Sailing, Singing, playing guitar, Gabrielle, Annoying Tristin
Dislikes: Tristin being an idiot, Mercy too for that matter
Special Abilities: He has a killer voice
Wand: 13’ koa wood with a kelpie hair
Broom: He prefers his boat
Pet: none he isn’t home enough.
Position: Singer, Song Writer, Sailor, Bartender
Years in profession:Bartender, 15 years
Experience: He ran Kona’s with his father for five years and two years after his dad’s death. He has been ‘helping’ Tristin for another 10.
Word Verification: *edit*It’s not a spoon, it’s not a fork, WTF?!
Writing Sample: Went Fishing!
