So when she goes out, she refused to drink, fearful that she will be like her father.
History:
October 25th was when Sarah McGinnis gave birth to a healthy baby girl in Shannon, Ireland. Kaitlynn was a quiet baby who took in the world with an awe filled look. She was a true Daddy’s little girl. She adored her father Brendon from the first moment he held her.
Kaitlynn loved both her parents. She idolized her mother for her quiet strength and how she was the perfect house wife. Her father was once a fair man. He was a strong man that never hurt a fly. However, No one in her small family ever expected that her mother was an undercover Auror who was picked to infiltrate the ranks of the Death Eaters in England. No, the realities of the secret war never set foot in the McGinnis household. They were truly happy. Kaitlynn loved her home in Shannon. She knew there was no better place than there.
On June 1 when she was four, Kyle was born. Kaitlynn loved her little brother on sight. She would constantly creep into his nursery to watch him. Her father told her she was now a big sister and big sister take care of their younger siblings. This stuck with Kaitlynn for the rest of her life especially through the dark times ahead.
The first sign of trouble was her mother’s announcement that they had to move to America. Kaitlynn wasn’t sure why they had to go. She preferred Ireland to this America any day. The move was the first sign of tension in the marriage and Kaitlynn didn’t want to go for fear it would get worse. Kaitlynn didn’t realize that the reason for the move was her mother’s cover was blown among the Death Eater’s rank. To protect her family, Sarah made the decision to hide in America. So in September of 1978, They arrived in Queens, NY.
The little apartment wasn’t the best but Kaitlynn grew to tolerate it. She helped her mother out by keeping the house clean during the day and watching Kyle. While her father wasn’t happy to leave his homeland and family behind, he smiled and made do. Kaitlynn figured if he can do it so could she. Nearly a year later, Kevin entered their lives. Kaitlynn was thrilled with having a second brother and again snuck in to watch him sleep in the room he shared with Kyle. Slowly the little apartment began to become a home through Kaitlynn and her mother’s tender care.
Just as everything seemed to be going well, The McGinnis’ were dealt a series of blows, that radically changed the happy home in to a hell that Kaitlynn still dreads to this day. In July of 1983, Brendon suffered a serious fall at his job. He survived but his leg became severely mangled. Kaitlynn doted on him as best she could, but It was easy to see that Brandon was not reacting well to being dependent on others. He started drinking and snapping at his daughter. Usually close to her father, the turnabout hurt her badly. Instead Brendon seemed to focus more on the boys than his daughter. Kaitlynn retreated to her mother’s side helping out as much as she could.
The next blow fell five days before Christmas that year. It seemed that Sarah’s past caught up with her. On a usual Christmas Shopping trip, Sarah was ambushed by a Death Eater who tracked her to America, with revenge in his heart. The reports recounted a vicious fight to the death. Sarah using the last of her strength killed her attacker before dying herself. Her body was found in an alley only four blocks from the apartment. Kaitlynn was pulled from her school by two strange men who brought her and Kyle home. She didn’t know they were Aurors who worked with her mom. Kaitlynn comforted her brothers as the men told Brendon who his wife really was. The deception and loss of the woman he loved sent Brendon to drink even harder. Using some of his pension, he flew Sarah’s body to Ireland to be buried on the family plot. The children were left behind in the care of a neighbor. When they returned, the dynamics of the house went through a radical change.
Brendon’s drinking changed him from a kind and gentle man into a drunkard. Kaitlynn was expected to replace the wife he lost by taking over the care of the household. Kaitlynn would go shopping right after school, then Cook and clean while her Brothers played or competed for their father’s affections. If she felt it was unfair, the quiet little girl never complained. In fact most of the time, she escaped her father’s notice. However she worried about her brothers. Kevin seemed to thrive over taking the brunt of their father’s temper while Kyle it seem became more and more of the focus for the verbal abuse. She worried that her brothers would think this was normal, yet she was helpless to stop it. Until one day her father got really drunk and started on Kyle. Kaitlynn, 11 at the time, yelled at her father to stop it and suddenly every single bottle of liquor shattered in their apartment. Terrified by the sight of what she did, Kaitlynn didn’t run as her father hit her for the first time. There was no way his daughter was going to be a damn witch, he told her.
Brendon soon changed his mind when the same Aurors who took Kaitlynn and Kyle out of school, arrived and explained how dangerous Kaitlynn’s magic could become untapped. Feeling that he lost his daughter, Brendon consented to Kaitlynn going to the local coven school. Kaitlynn split her time between her studies and taking care of her family. Her father began to criticize her more and more. However he also ostracized her as well. She didn’t get the beatings that her brothers got, but she didn’t feel welcomed in her own home. Instead, Kaitlynn escaped through the pages of the stories in her books.
The first time she got a taste of freedom came when she went to SWIM. Her father was happy to get rid of the witch. Kaitlynn was worried about her brothers. She had noticed the beatings that both were taking. So the trip to Salem’s Peak was full of worry about this place and her family. However the second she saw the little town Kaitlynn felt at home. That first day she knew this would be their escape. Kaitlynn was sorted in to Ptolemy and she thrived there. She loved SWIM so much, she wrote home to her brothers’ everyday about it. Little did she know that her father was also seeing the letters she sent home.
Her father was outraged. No son of his was going to be a witch and no daughter of his was going to make them changed their minds. So he waited until that summer when Kaitlynn was home from SWIM. That night was the first and last time Kaitlynn ever used her powers to hurt someone. After being home for only a few days, her father confronted her about her letters and stories. Before Kaitlynn could do anything, Brendon began hitting her. Kaitlynn tried to block, her screams drew her two brothers to witness the scene. Somehow in the middle of the beating, Kaitlynn cast a spell. Every blow Brendon gave her he felt. Soon Brendon had beaten himself to pulp. Realizing he couldn’t hit his children, He left Kaitlynn along. To Kaitlynn it was a blessing and a curse, her father completely ignored her presence. Often telling people he had no daughter. The words were just as painful as the blows, but Kaitlynn had a plan.
As her father forced religion down her brother’s throat, Kaitlynn began to do research on her mother. She would stay behind as they went to church. She often wished that she could have kept Kyle with her. She could see how much he hated being forced into anything. Especially something that treated you as evil. However, Kaitlynn used her time alone to eventually track down some things of her mother’s. One of these was a huge trust fund that her mother had set up for her children in Salem’s Peak. Kaitlynn claimed the trust fund, but hid the fact from her family. She didn’t want her father to get his hands on it. During her senior year with the help of a few teachers, Kaitlynn started the proceeding to adopt her brothers and looking for a place to stay. She bought a two story house on Summerbee St. for them. That summer she returned home for the last time. A new graduate, she informed her father that she was leaving and taking her brothers with her. After her lawyer confronted her father with the evidence of abuse, he willingly awarded her custody of her brothers. Brendon cited he didn’t want any damn witches in his home anymore. Kaitlynn moved her brothers to Salem’s peak on July 7.
She slowly began to juggle being home fore Kevin while Kyle went off to his first year at SWIM. Kaitlynn did her best to help Kevin get use to being away from their father. In fact Kevin inspired the idea for a coffee shop. He pointed out that the house was too big for just them. Together they began to think of what to do with the downstairs. When Kyle returned home for the first summer, the three siblings created Celtic Coffee, a completely dry coffee shop.
The renovating of the house on Summerbee St gave Kaitlynn something to do while her brothers were at SWIM. By the spring of Kyle’s junior year, the shop was ready to open. It was quite the success under Kaitlynn’s guidance and her brothers’ help. The Shop was designed around a Celtic theme with Irish artisan’s works gracing the shop. The stained glass doors were imported from Ireland.
However later that year, Kaitlynn’s heart stopped when she heard the attack on SWIM. She paced her store as she worried about her brothers. Her customers banded around her until she received word that they were fine. Kyle even had pictures which he sold the Screamer. She was proud of his initiative, but gave him a good yelling at for risking his life. She often sent coffee and food to the school as they regrouped from the attack. And in the end while she would rather Kevin stay at home and safe, Mik Kona persuaded her to trust Gabrielle Blagden. Kaitlynn allowed Kevin to return to SWIM.
Currently, Kaitlynn tends to her shop. Slowly she is testing the dating scene much to her brothers’ dislike. It seems that they want Kaitlynn safe. Kaitlynn, on the other hand, knows that she can’t expect them to stay home forever. Besides, they have their own heart to tend to. But Her brothers will remain her main priority, then the shop. Kaitlynn also calls home every so often to check on her father. While he alienated her before, he has been civil to her bringing up a memory of what they once shared.
