Weekdays were alway somewhat of a drag, especially when the school year started up again. It seemed like the life sort of left the mall until the kids came back. Of course, she had her own little one coloring in the back. Charlie was humming a tune that Kal didn't recognize and she shrugged her shoulders, Kal assumed her father had taught her something new when Charlie had spent Saturday with him. He always loved to have her around and it was a good time for Kal to catch up on store things, like the budget and money without having to keep an extra eye on Charlie.
For now, she had Noah prowling, no, more like lumbering around the store while she sat hand sewing a sleeve back onto a robe behind the front counter. She was actually starting to enjoy the quiet afternoon. It was hard for her to get a little peace and quiet due to her hectic life, but it was somewhat nice, having this time to herself with only some sewing to keep her busy. She was glad to be back to hand sewing. Usually she had some magic going in the store, but today was too lazy a day for magic sewing.
There wasn't a big demand for used robes right now, somehow it seemed that a good majority of people had found themselves in the way of money and they weren't demanding anything from her, so she wasn't really eager about getting all the work done that she had to do. As she drew the needle and thread through the fabric, the sound was soothing. It was something from her childhood, the sound of the sewing was calming to her. She was almost on the verge of dozing off it not for the fact that Charlie was in the other room and she was keeping an ear open for the little girl.
"Mommy!" the three year old cried out, in what seemed to be an anxious, but not overly needy voice. Kal let it go for a few moments, hoping that perhaps she would forget about it, but she called out after a few minutes, "Mommy! Come here," in the most demanding voice Kalista had ever heard her child use. Arching an eyebrow, she put down the sewing and stood from her chair, heading into the back with Noah at her heels, "What is it Angel?" She asked, curious to see what the fair-haired imp was up to. Of course, the sight that greeted her was not overly pleasant at all. Charlie was covered in marker stains and a white robe lying on the ground not only had marker marks on it, but also imprints of little dirty shoes on it.
"Charlie!" Kal cried, lifting the girl from standing on the robe to another spot, "what happened back here?" she asked, curious and furious at the same time. That dress robe would have brought in some serious money for them! She gave Charlie that you better have a good explanation for this look, and the little girl looked petrified at the robe and her mother's tone. Seeing the look in her eyes, Kal softened, kneeling down to be on Charlie's level, brushing some whispy strands of bleach blonde hair out of her eyes, "What happened honey?" she asked in a much softer voice, imploring the little girl to answer her, in a much nicer way than before.
Charlie put her arms around her mother's neck and sniffled before pulling away. "I was playing with the pretty dresses and there was a big icky bug in it!" she glared at the robe, "I wanted you to get rid of it Mommy, but since you didn't - I gotted it," she sniffled, scared that perhaps the bug might come out again. Shaking her head, Kal couldn't help but chuckle a little. So, the marker marks were stabs and the footprints were stomps because of a scary bug, probably something that came in one of the boxes of donated items. She hated cardboard boxes for that reason - they housed cockroaches. Ignoring the dress, she scooped up Charlie, took the marker out of the little girl's hand and capped it, tossing it down onto the table where Charlie had been coloring. "Let's go out in front," she offered, feeling Noah's nose sniffing at Charlie's foot in concern.
"She's alright," Kal assured Noah with a pat on the head. He was such a good dog, and ever faithful to Kal and Charlie. Peter had given her two of the best things in her life, he just didn't stick around long enough to see them. Of course, she told herself she didn't care, most of the time it worked. Charlie laid her head against Kal's shoulder and sniffed, putting her thumb in her mouth, a comforting technique she had taken up. Kal rubbed her back with her left hand and took her back to the front counter, sitting in her chair behind it, leaving the sewing to itself for now. charlie was a little more important.
Noah resumed his spot by the front door, scaring off any punks and enticing animal lovers to her store. He was really a big softy, but some people didn't know that and with such a big dog sitting at the opening of a store, it was easy to see that he would scare away possible shop lifters, especially since Kalista had trained him to pick up on that. If only she had a customer or something to distract herself and Charlie. She too hated the thought of bugs in the clothing and shivered involuntarily, she'd have to do a thorough cleansing of that back room now. She didn't want to think about that though, she'd rather think about selling something to someone. After all, her clothes were just as good (better, she thought) than twillfit and tattings, people just needed to come in.
