Character's Personality
Good Traits: (150+ words) Gavin Flewelling is a very cerebral man who takes an interest in intellectual conversation. To him, knowledge is a personal crusade. He feels that he must find meaning in all that he does. He imagines himself on a quest to answer the age-old questions of the universe, although he will not admit it to others.
Gavin, who has never had many friends, typically spends his leisure time with his aging father and his younger sister's family. Gavin is also a very reliable confidant. It's not that he is good at keeping secrets—he just doesn't find any worth in gossip.
Because he is rarely involved intimately with other people, he tends to be nonjudgmental and unbiased. Often times, he is undecided on a decision solely because he can analyze and understand the broad array of benefits each option offers. He makes a good judge since he tends to not form alliances with anything or anyone.
Bad Traits: (150+ words) Gavin is very easily distracted by new ideas or projects, often forgetting where he is or what he was doing. His abstract thinking directly affects his habits, notably his penmanship. Others may see him as being aloof at best, slightly insane at worst.
He is very uninvolved in regards to the affairs of others, but this is not because he dislikes people in general. Due to his unnatural obsession with numbers and facts, Flewelling often lacks certain social graces. Instead, he is very quiet when around others. His is often at a loss when asked about matters of the heart. He does not have many friends, nor has he ever been married. Both of these are possibly because of his in-depth involvement with the sciences.
He is the sort of mentor that overemphasizes self-improvement and learning. Gavin's decision making is based on a rationalization of given facts, but he sometimes overlooks the repercussions of these decisions on a personal scale.
Likes: Flewelling has few hobbies aside from studying and experimenting. He still holds on to the hope that he will one day be able to make a difference in the world. Gavin enjoys gardening, although he has no special skill for it. He also continues to help his family raise sheep on holidays. Flewelling finds a particular pleasure in being curled up with a book with a hot cup of tea. His older sister, Morgan, likes to collect rare plants, so he sends her a few specimens every year or so.
Dislikes: Petty, childish things. Materialism, gaudiness, excessive flamboyancy—all of these things disagree with him. Call him a simple farm boy, but he doesn't desire to be associated with anything of the kind. Loud, noisy sorts; people that talk too much and don't have enough to say.

Character's History
The Flewelling family makes its home in the rural districts of Salem's Peak, near the school. Originally, the Flewelling clan was from Wales, but they immigrated during the 1800s along with many other Europeans. They settled on farmlands near the already blossoming village of Salem's Peak where they raised sheep and goats. His parents both grew up with a wizarding background, so it was not a surprise to Rhys, Gavin's father, when he started developing magical abilities. Gavin's mother Eres, however, was not around by this time. They had had two daughters and a son, but unfortunately, Eres passed away when giving birth to the youngest girl, Gwenalyn.
The older daughter, Morgan, took the matter of raising her sister and brother on herself. Because he was so young, Gavin never felt like his mother's death had severely impacted his childhood. His father was probably the most devastated by the incident, and he remains to this day a rather sheltered person. All three of the children grew up with the responsibility of assisting their widowed father with taking care of the herd. When Gavin was old enough, his father sent him to a coven school, like his older sister. Later, he passed his SMART with impressive scores and continued his education at SWIM.
At school, he was enraptured by the science of Astronomy and the precision of Numerology. He was also decent in Alchemy, all in all what you would call a regular science nerd. His mentor and professor of Astronomy at SWIM encouraged Gavin to continue his studies into a profession after graduation involving the sciences. However, he felt obligated to return to his father's cottage to help with the farm. Gavin had ambitions and dreams of his own, but perhaps this simple act of selflessness is the sole testament to his true character--a fact that remains bitter on the tongue of a wasted youth.
He spent the next few years committing himself to his family, but he diligently kept up with his hobby of star-watching in his free time. Eventually, it evolved into a small Astronomy club where he and a few hobbyist Astronomers gathered to exchange ideas and knowledge. He published a few articles in papers across seas in regards to Astronomical theories, but he did not receive much notoriety for them. He wondered sometimes how his brilliance had been wasted on the mundane.
His life was simple and unremarkable, for the most part. In fact, the most eventful day he could remember in a long time was when the Neo-DEs attacked the school. Gavin spent the evening in the living room, reading the article in the paper aloud to his family. He could remember his niece curled up in his sister's lap, and the somber expression on his father's face. Gavin detested pettiness, and he considered discrimination the ultimate stupidity. During times like those, he found himself wishing he were an auror, or at least a more adept spell-caster. He wished he had made something of himself.
His yearnings did not go unnoticed by others. Soon, Gavin's family members urged him to pursue a career outside of the farm life. Rhys now had two grandsons, and it was obvious that Gavin was no longer needed on the farm like he once was. Gavin could not have been more elated at the thought of finally staking his claim in the world. He dreamed of inventing this great thing or discovering that wondrous theory. The chance of a lifetime lay before him!
At the age of 34, Gavin, who had maintained correspondence with his former Astronomy Professor, penned a letter to his friend with interest in being employed in the magical industry. The Professor, who was looking to retire, recommended he apply for a position as the new Astronomy teacher, which also carried the prestige of Ptolemy Head. Although it wasn't the job he had hoped for, it was definitely a start. His father was also convinced that Gavin's presence at the school would help make Gwenalyn at ease when her children were old enough to attend SWIM. This push lead him to apply, and he was soon eagerly welcomed as the next Astronomy teacher.
Post Example:
Even though there was a distinct amber haze still on the horizon, the stars were already starting to twinkle onto the vast blue canvas that was the sky. A eerie, piercing howl sounded from the not so distant woods, causing Gavin to subconsciously pull his robes closer to himself. The evening was chilly compared to the previous week, which made Flewelling expect more students to skip class than average. Not that they need weather as an excuse, he thought sullenly.
He pulled out his pocket watch, glancing at it irritatedly. Slipping it back into his robes, he started patrolling the telescopes around the field to ensure everything was as it should be. Without waiting for the stragglers to arrive, he began his lecture with a stern eye.
“Today, class,” he barked, “we will be looking for the constellation Orion. Do any of you know which Greek mythological figure is represented by this constellation?” He gave a slight pause, not really concerned with who did and who did not. However, he had found that a number of his students found constellations easier to identify after learning a Greek character to associate it with. In reality, he wasn't very fond of linking celestial bodies with mythological entities.
“Orion lies on the celestial equator, which we have been studying in class. Your assignment for this evening is to locate Orion, identify the major stars that the constellation is comprised of, and to also identify which star in the constellation is a red star. Although there is a definition for this in your text book, I ensure you all that you will not need it.”
At least, he hoped not. Red stars are called so because they appear red, after all. And while one may not be able to discern the difference with the naked eye, the telescopes the students had been equipped were more than adequate.
He sighed, knowing full well that he would have to deal with some students that just didn't get it...one of the things he despised about his job. A few students had begun adjusting their telescopes, but most stood still waiting for some sort of indication or instruction. “Well? Go!” he said in aggravation, flailing his arms skyward.
