Name: Sarah
Other characters on the board: None at this Time
Are you over 13?: Yes
Name: Sellaphix Doggerel
Age: 35
Gender: male
Birthday/Sign: April 2 / Aries
Blood Type/Purity: B- / Half-blood (Type 1)
Appearance: Sellaphix is a dark-featured man, his mother’s side coming from the Black Irish. He has thick eyebrows, a prominent nose and hawk-like eyes. He dresses in wizards robes, more or less in the current mode preferring neutral colors like greys, browns and greens. He has a somewhat raspy baritone voice, somewhat rhotic at times, per his mothers’ influence and his time in Burmuda. His private life is not filled with the healthiest of activities and distinctly lacking in sleep and so Sellaphix often looks sick, with dark circles below his eyes.
He has an easy stride, but a stiffer gait in cold weather due to a bum knee he earned in a pick-up rugby match with his fellow graduate students.
Personality: He has a somewhat abnormal interest in deviants and does a good job of nurturing his own boyish tendencies for cheek and mischief. He is very interested in his own success and finds it distasteful when people waste their time or choose to do things they would rather not because they are easy or convenient. He is of a mind that impracticality is a word for the lazy or stupid, but often contradicts himself when he skirts rules for that very reason. He has no head for paperwork, and will often mock inanities like small talk or introductions. He has both a hard time and fairly adept skill at dealing with children, but usually comes off in a hitch to explain the points of the lesson.
He has a temper, finding that negative emotions are healthy. Enjoys arguing, not bickering. He can be, at times, obnoxiously self-assured. He is reliably unreliable, but can always be expected to do something unexpected to come through in a hitch.
History: Elliot Doggerel, Sellaphix's father and the second husband of his witch mother Olivia Ballentyne, is a chemist with commitment problems. Thus, they moved around quite a bit when he was young. Sellaphix was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1965, but in the first fifteen years of his life he's spent time in Burmuda, Dublin, Istanbul, Canberra, Detroit, San Diego and Fairbanks. His mother pushed with ferocity that he be schooled at Hogwarts in her native United Kingdom, but Elliot would have none of it. The fight led to a rift, his mother returning to her home in Northern Ireland to raise his sisters in a proper magical home.
Sellaphix had manifested quite naturally when he was a young boy in the usual ways. Explosions during tantrums and minor success making sparks with his mother's wand. But his magical success stalled when his parents separated and Sellaphix was sent to public muggle school whereever his father happened to be. The unstable nature of his home life did not breed a well-behaved youth of 15 or 16 and he did a grand job of getting himself into minor trouble.
On a more positive track, he did very well under his father's tutalage in chemistry. In kind, hearing of his son's interest, his mother owled him books on potion-making and alchemy and eventually he followed his magical roots to a Alchemy Conservatory in Cyprus upon graduating from high school. He didn't get his first wand until then, when he was eighteen, and therefore has never taken to wandwork or spell-smithing. Instead, he expressed his scholarship and magical tendencies through cauldrons and runework.
He has only had casual relationships and one botched engagement.
Likes: Selt-stirring cauldrons, cigars, rainy days, swiftthistle
Dislikes: Chalk, children, meetings, itchy socks
Special Abilities: None, despite an exceptional aptitude in alchemy.
Wand: Olive, dragon heartstring, 14 1/3 inches
Broom: - none -
Pet: - none -
Class Taught: Alchemy
Special Titles: Head of Agrippa
Years Teaching: - none -
Reason for Teaching: Interest in alchemy, high alchemy credentials, free place to stay, steady paycheck
Writing Sample:
Sellaphix's desk was about the size of a small country cottage. Beneath it, he'd found a suitable place for a rather large rug the properties of which he only spoke about in confidence due to the current illegality of owning flying carpets. The desk kept it properly weighed down, but it didn't stop the rug (called Tafresh) from tapping its tassles impatiently when scuffed or stepped on.
The alchemist himself had finished putting the notes on the board and the lists, ingredients and diagrams all jockeyed about for lead position. The draught description kept shoving over to the left to edge out the boiling instructions and the drawing of the swiftthistle kept adding more leaves to itself in order to appear larger. The notes would write on the magical chalkboard all period, making note taking somewhat difficult.
Sellaphix himself was pouring over a crossword puzzle from the Boston Augury. Unlike muggle puzzles, the wizarding counterpart allowed answers in rune, glyph and symbol. There were a few burn holes in bottom columns where Sellaphix had burned out answers he was not pleased about answering with drops of acid.
Teaching freshmen courses was more about crowd control than anything else, teaching the children how to learn rather than teaching them anything useful. But they'd get to use plenty of fire, which would keep them entertained.
