Dakota still didn't meet her room mate. She wasn't very excited about it, though. She would much rather be alone. Plus, if this room mate snored, she would be sleeping outside her room with a sleeping bag. It was that, or she hurt herself. She went out to where everyone of the Merlin house gathered together, to look at a bulletin board to see who her room mate was. Running her finger down the piece of paper, she finally found her name next to Roberta's name. She was completely fine and was about to walk away when she saw a dreaded word. Freshmen. She held in her scream as she read the word again just to see if it was a trick of her mind. Walking rather loudly, she went back to her room.
Dakota looked around in her room. There was no way she was going to spend an entire year with an immature freshmen. Nope! No way! Well, if she had to she was going to make sure that she got everything that she wanted in her room. Looking around, she picked the bed that was closet to the window. Examining the night stand, she found a scratch on hers. Running over to her room mates night stand, she found no scratch on her. Smiling rather evilly, she levitated her scratched night stand over to her room mates side of the room, and levitated her room mates non-scratched night stand to her side. She then looked at the sheets on her bed. They seemed perfect which made her a little happier. Dakota examined ever possible little thing, and switched if there was switching needed.
By the end, she was wiped out. She left her room, went over to a couch, sat down, and sighed.
"Freshmen room mates?" Dakota asked herself quietly.

In that crowd of students around the bulletin board, one student started hooting and hollering beyond all restraint. Braxton pounded on his chest and pointed to the sky like there’d been a touchdown. Rather than a freshman, the sheet had listed his roommate as Parker, Andrew. He quieted just in time to hear the last few of Dakota’s footfalls and see her stomp into a room; presumably hers. With little else to do, he thought spying on angry people to be a fine prospect, and followed the girl down the hall on his tip-toes. The boy pressed his back to wall just aside the door and edged to where he could peak around and watch whatever she was doing. He was not mindful that such an act done at the wrong time-such as the moment after the students were situated-would make him a peeping tom.
When he saw Dakota come to he door Braxton zipped to cover up his presence. The plan he came up with was to turn his back to the hall and crouch down, as though he were looking at a spider with its legs pulled off. Whether it worked or not, nothing was said. Eventually he followed her down to the commons and checked her room mate. After fishing out her name he crossed over and planted himself down on the floor in front of where Dakota sat. “So, you’re giving your room mate the welcoming committee, huh? Do you know her... whats-her-name Hart? Like, did she show up to the opening picnic wearing the same dress?”

Dakota could die right now. How could they do this. Junior with a freshmen? One of them was going to be dead by the end of the year. It would probably be her from torture. The thought of a freshmen reminded her of her little sister, little step sister that is. If there was one person in the world that Dakota could say she didn't like the most, it would be her step sister. She was the most evil thing anyone could think of. More than once she found that brat with scissors in her hand about to cut Dakota's hair when she was sleeping. No one ever believed her when she told her parents that Elena, the brat, was evil. And that, is the reason she hates little kids.
She saw Braxton in front of her, and laughed at what he said, a I-wish laugh. "If she wore the same dress as me I would hug her compared to what happening to me. Shes a freshmen. Me and Freshmen... ha ha no thats not going to work. At all" Dakota sighed heavily, and tapped her fingers on the couch. It was something she did when she was mad.

“A Freshman?” There was a generic surprise in Braxton’s voice that didn’t reveal whether he was sympathetic to Dakota or not. The unfortunate circumstance of a three-month long sophomore year had created something of a generation gap, as though he had gone from being a freshman two years ago straight to being an upperclassman. The effect was far from disturbing in itself. Discounting his position as a hall monitor, little more was required of him than was before and with somewhat greater liberty, or so he’d found in their first few days back. The glory of youth, where thirteen year olds towered over those of ten and eleven by the merit of their many advanced years hadn’t yet worn off on Braxton, especially in light of Driver’s License, acquired just that year.
When he spoke again he revealed his position to Dakota. “So... there’s a problem because she’s a freshman? It doesn’t even look like her stuff’s unpacked, so it can’t be like she made a mess of the room...” He was on thin ice and he knew it; the last time he’d seen Dakota tap her fingers in such a way, he’d accidentally ruined a potion of hers in Alchemy and cost her all her points for the day. “I mean-I mean, we were paired up with juniors and seniors when we came in. It’s like a leadership thing, I thought. Who was your first roommate?” It was an easy position to take for a boy who’d landed perhaps the most sought after roommate in the school, President Andy.

Dakota figured that Braxton wouldn't know where she was coming from. She stopped tapping her fingers, and placed them in her lap. She would be fine with a freshmen if her mom never remarried to man with the worst child in the whole world. Before, that she thought of little kids as the most adorable things in the world. Now, she could care less about them. Telling her mom not to marry her step father because of his child would have been like telling her that she was getting married at the age of 14.
"First roomate..um...some junior" Dakota said.
She actually felt bad for the junior that was paired with her when she first came into this school. She completely understood why her room mate ignored her. She could only recall talking to her room mate about the time of the day. She looked over at the chart with rooms on it, and for a second she wanted to light it on fire. Realizing that, that wouldn't do anything but get her a few detentions, she kept her wand in her pocket. "I feel bad for that junior" Dakota said tapping her fingers again. "I think Ill go die now" She said burying her head in her hands.

“Hey, hey. No dying. Not on the couch, anyway. Can’t you find a cliff to jump off of like a decent person? Scoot over.” There was plenty of room on the coach but he sat down right next to Ludwig. “Some junior, huh? Wow. Sounds like you had a year for the record books, there. You share a room with someone for like nine months. Must’ve been some kinda impression, nine months and all you remember is that they were a junior. My first room mate was Bill McIntyre. Junior. This guy hadn’t handled a ball or a bat in his life. Spent so much time in books that he made reservations between the pages. McIntyre had this idea just after winter that we should try and learn a few things about each other. He gave me a book to read and I was supposed to teach him something about sports. I read Grapes of Wrath and he never even looked at a broom. Last year we didn’t talk much. Mac was studying day and night for those tests.”
Braxton emitted a low, sentimental laugh as he was pressed up against Dakota. “Anyway, if you’re going to die, at the very least you can wait for your roomie’s bags to get ported up, then you can die on top of her stuff. That would get to her for sure.” Crossing his arms, he leaned away simultaneous with turning to look at her. “Or, you know what you could do? Switch rooms with me. Just gotta run it by the head of house, get his approval. I’ll start grooming... whoever Hart is for the team.”

Jumping of the cliff was a good a idea, and she would have thanked Braxton for the idea, but that would might give him the wrong impression. As he requested, she moved over on the couch placing her tapping fingers back onto her lap. She didn't know why she didn't remember her room mate. Maybe it was because she didn't want anything to so with a junior? Or maybe she was afraid of the girl? She did remember her being rather tall.
She laughed about the idea of dying on the girls bags. Switching rooms to stay with Andy. Ha! Yea right. She was sure that being in Andy's room was better than being with a freshmen, but she wouldn't want to be sleeping knowing that Andy had a head full of pranks. "No way. I'm not living with Andy. I'll wake up being tied to my bed or something." Dakota said, "I can just sleep outside my room, I don't know but this freshmen thing isn't going to work"

“No, no. Andy always unties you before you wake up.” The statement was true, insofar as he could never remember waking up bound to his bed, but sometimes with rope burns around his wrists after having a dream where he was lashed to a tree and being fed to King Kong. “Anyway, how can you hate a freshman but still complain about being tied to a bed by Andy Parker? That’s gotta be a dream in comparison.” Implications and innuendos of being tied to a bed were lost on him.
“So remind me, Dakota. What’s so bad about this freshman that you’ve never met? I mean we were freshmen just two years ago, and there was nothing wrong with us, was there?” Braxton had been an insufferable freshman. He was insufferable now, but marginally less so. “I know. I’ll room with you, and this freshman can room with Andy. Because-well, if I catch you sleeping out on a couch, I’ll have to do... something.” It took him a second and a half to postulate the situation. “Drag the couch back to your room and dump you onto the floor or something.”

“No, no. Andy always unties you before you wake up.”
Oh, that was so much better. Really, she couldn't imagine being in the same room as him. They were friends, but he was just way to smart, especially with him talking about love potions. She might wake up one day suddenly in love with Andy. Thinking about what she said before about being tied to a bed, and sharing with a freshmen, she realized that it didn't make sense. Her brain wasn't working right now. Or her common sense. "I love Andy, as a friend I mean, but living with him would just be too much." Dakota said.
It wasn't exactly the fact that she was a freshmen, it was the fact that she was younger. She wasn't sure if Braxton would understand about her step sister and all. Most people just laughed at her and said something like your just acting like sisters. Compared to the relationship she has with her brother, her and her step-sister acted like they hated each other."No, we were pretty cool freshmen," Dakota said smiling, "I just don't like younger kids. Its all because of my oh-so-sweet step sister." She said the last part very sarcastically.

So it was one of those, he thought. A single child who had struggled to make friends since he was eleven and enrolled in the magical education system, Braxton’s model for all friendships was what he had with Andy. “Yeah, so you’re going to take the room with this freshman, right? Because your options are getting short, Dakota.” Only just now he had realized that it was his responsibility as the Merlin hall monitor if Dakota wouldn’t sleep in a room. He asked her bluntly to make sure.
Obliviously he had begun to take on the attitude of authority, proposing rock and hard-place situations to coerce whomever it was required of him. “You’re going to have to sleep in a room. And you know if this freshman doesn’t get broken in they’re going to come up all snotty. You’re perfect for telling this kid what’s what if you hate her and you haven’t even met her.” Again he pivoted his head to look straight at Ludwig. “Say, is your step-sister going to be here next year? And is she pretty? Answer the second question first.”

Dakota nodded to the question. Yea, she was going to share a room with the stupid freshmen. At least she switched around the entire room so the freshmen had all the crappy things. She hoped that the girl was going to be like her when she was a freshmen, if she was then she wouldn't talk to her, or the girl would even look at her. There would be no asking for help with homework, or help with boy troubles. If any of that was asked, she would just laugh.
Braxton was just like any other boy: always thinking about girls. She laughed when he asked her if Elena, her step sister was pretty. "Do you really think I look at that bit-" Dakota stopped herself from letting the word slip out."Really, I don't know but my mom always tells me that anyone can tell that me and my step sister aren't blood related 'cuz we don't look anything alike." She calculated the years the her and Elena were apart in her head. "And we will be out of this school for at least two years when shes a freshmen." All this talk about her step sister was making her sick.

There was a feeling, what some people called a vibe, coming off Ludwig. It reached Braxton through his joints and seeped in sideways until it was squeezing around his chest uncomfortably. It got just bad enough that he scooched sideways down the couch, away from her a bit. Despite assuring the minimum compliance with the rules, he felt something wasn’t quite right. Something would have to be done, and it would probably come down to the monitor sooner or later. He would deny it later, but his idea came from a popular syndicated television show.
Braxton looked around the room. “Oh, well. Hey, does this mean that you’re going to have a problem with my little sister? Because she’s coming in this year, and she’ll be-you know-a freshman. She’s rooming with Tollinger, and if you’re going to drive her up a wall that might be a problem.” There was a feeling like a printing press running in his head. “Because I can vouch for my sister. She’s alright. You’d like her-she’s nothing like me. She’s actually my cousin but she’s been around with us so long I just call her sister.”

Dakota pulled her feet up to her body, and hugged them. Her usual position. She put her hands on her knees, and sighed. No one really understood her about her step sister. Sometimes she wished that someone could trade places with her, and just try staying with Elena for one day. There was no doubt about it that by the end of the day, they would be begging to be back in their own body.
Dakota shook her head. She didn't think she would have a problem with Braxton's sister only because if she was mean to her, then Braxton would probably hate Dakota. She ran her fingers through her hair, and then put her head on her knees."Nah. Only because I know you. There will be no problem with your cousin-" Dakota thought for a millisecond"-sister"
